On April 19, 2024, a new exhibition opened at Jasna Góra. It presents primarily militaria recalling the combat trail of the soldiers of the 12th Podolski Uhlan Regiment during the September 1939 campaign and further battles of World War II. They took part in the most important battles, including those at Mokra and Monte Cassino, which were fought during the last war.
The exhibition is located in the temporary exhibition pavilion in the St. Roch Bastion.
The exhibition at Jasna Gora is part of the 85th anniversary of the Battle of the Mokra and the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino.
The Battle of Mokra is one of the first clashes of the Polish army during World War II, which took place on September 1, 1939. About 6,000 Polish soldiers repulsed an attack by 14,000 German soldiers of the 4th Armored Division, thus delaying the Wehrmacht's march on Warsaw.
On May 18, 1944, Polish soldiers of the 2nd Polish Corps under the command of General Wladyslaw Anders, together with Western Allied troops, seized the ruins of the Monte Cassino monastery, opening the road to Rome. The Battle of Monte Cassino went down in Polish history as a symbol of the sacrifice and heroism of Polish soldiers fighting on the Western Front for Poland's freedom.
Among the exhibits on display are unique documents such as letters from an officer of the 12th Podolski Uhlan Regiment from Kozielsk, an original battle-dress type uniform jacket of a soldier - a participant in the Italian campaign.
On the display for the first time are presented the remains of a Vickers Wellington bomber, belonging to the 305 Squadron that took part in the Battle of Britain.
The main exhibition has also a number of memorabilia from Squadron 305, which was the fourth combat squadron formed in Great Britain in 1940. The memorabilia was donated to Jasna Gora by Poles living in London.
The exhibition "From Mokra to Monte Cassino - the trail of the 12th Podolski Uhlan Regiment in Jasna Gora's St. Roch Bastion can be visited until September 30, 2024.
